Traditional orthodontics have a long history of successfully straightening smiles which is why they remain a popular treatment to this day. Originally invented in 1819, they have an established reputation for being a reliable solution to perfect even the most crooked, overcrowded, and gapped grins. Because they’ve been around such a long time, they have inevitably had some memorable on-screen moments. Continue reading to learn 5 pop culture references featuring braces!
#1: There’s Something About Mary
You may remember this blockbuster film for its sophomoric humor and star-studded cast, but you may have forgotten that the main character, Ted, wore braces. If Ben Stiller wasn’t already funny enough, the shining metal in his mouth might be enough to leave you laughing. The main character Mary, played by Cameron Diaz, even references it at one point when she mentions, “He had this huge mouth full of metal. You know how I like braces.”
#2: Clueless
Another comedy classic you may be familiar with also featured a prominent person wearing traditional braces. Clueless is a 1995 film about a stylish teen coping with the ups and downs of adolescent life in Beverly Hills. One of her friends, Murray (played by Donald Faison) has braces on and flashes them proudly. Do you think they’ll stop him from living his best life? As if!
#3: Pepsi Commercial
If someone were to ask you to name supermodels, would you mention Cindy Crawford? Many people associate her with the height of fashion runways in the 1980s and 1990s. She’s had a long and successful career full of magazine covers, clothing catalogs, and on the television screen. In 1992, she appeared in Pepsi’s Super Bowl commercial sporting a beautiful set of shining braces and they never looked so good!
#4: Lisa Simpson
With 35 seasons and counting, The Simpsons has been a comedy staple since the late 1980s. This animated family has experienced every imaginable adventure their writers could come up with, including dental care. In 1993, one popular episode features Mr. Burns working to eliminate his employees’ dental plan just as viewers discover that Lisa needs braces. Homer tries to resolve the issue by unionizing the workers and striking to keep their benefits.
#5: Monsters University
Disney Pixar is known for its family-friendly films, like Monsters Inc. and its prequel, Monsters University. Made in 2013, this movie features two monsters, Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan, learning how to be the scariest they can be. During it, the short, one-eyed Mike references having finished his orthodontic treatment. As a result, he dutifully wears his retainer throughout the plot.
Whether you’re a child, an adult, rich and famous, or the person next door, if you’re hoping for a straighter smile then braces can help!
