With Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and New Years right around the corner there are plenty of opportunities to celebrate in the coming weeks. Naturally, along with those big events there will be plenty of big meals too!  But if you wear dentures, you may not be able to enjoy the same foods you always did in seasons past. Don’t put your smile at risk this year: beware of these denture dangers that could damage your prosthetics!

Risky Treats

Though your dentures allow you to enjoy a wide range of foods, there are still a few options that should be avoided. These treats are known to cause damage and difficulties cleaning:

  • Sticky items such as marshmallows, caramel, taffy, and cranberry sauce
  • Hard or crunchy sweets like as candy canes, ribbon candy, or peppermints
  • Nuts (or foods that contain nuts)
  • Crunchy raw veggies like carrots or celery
  • Hard fruits like apples or pears
  • Corn on the cob
  • Tough meats or jerky
  • Popcorn

Friendly Foods

The good news is that there are still plenty of seasonal selections you can enjoy if you wear dentures, including:

  • Steamed or roasted vegetables such as carrots, broccoli, brussels sprouts and green bean casserole (without almonds!)
  • Smooth soups, stews, and broths
  • Tender meats such as turkey and chicken breast
  • Mashed or regular potatoes
  • Salmon or other soft fish
  • Pasta or rice

Other Helpful Holiday Denture Tips

In addition to being mindful of what you eat, it is important to stick to your regular denture care routine. Be sure to remove them at least twice a day for a full cleaning, ensuring that you are brushing all sides. Floss between each tooth, and rinse well. While it’s easy to get exhausted with all the festivities, be sure you’re still removing them every night before you head to bed and soak them in a glass of water or denture soak.

Finally, remember to not use them as tools or to open packaging or stubborn gift wrap! Grabbing a pair of scissors may take a few extra moments, but it could save you hundreds of or even thousands of dollars on costly repairs or replacement prosthetics!

Remember, the holidays should be a time of joy, but it can easily turn into a disaster if you damage your dentures. Don’t get stuck with expensive restorations and watch what you eat and how you use them, so they stay in great shape all season long!
