You should be seeing your dentist at least twice a year for regular cleanings and checkups. However, approximately a third of Americans don’t see their dentist as often as they would like to. It is easy to forget to call and make an appointment and before you know it, it’s been years since you’ve had a dental checkup. If this sounds like you, read on. A dentist shares some tips to help you keep up with your dental visits and know how to prepare for one.
How Do I Keep Up with Dental Visits?
Here are a few tips that can help you stay on track when it comes to your dental checkups:
Book at the Office
Next time you go in for a cleaning and checkup, be sure to book your next appointment before you leave the practice. This way, you won’t have to call later to schedule a new one. You can always move your appointment to another time later, but at least you will have it on the calendar.
Visit at the Same Time
You may have an easier time going to the dental office during certain parts of the year. For instance, it may be easier to have your teeth cleaned when you don’t have to worry about picking up your kids from school. If this is the case, schedule your appointments for when they have their summer and winter breaks.
Write It Down
If you don’t write down the time of your appointment, you could easily forget about it. As soon as you schedule your visit, either write it down in your planner or put it in your calendar on your phone. Ask your dental staff if they can send you a reminder email or text message. When you are reminded a few weeks ahead of time, you will be more about to plan ahead.
How I Prepare for a Dental Visit?
Here are a few things you should do to prepare for your upcoming visit:
- Brush your teeth: You want your smile to be clean, but be sure not to brush vigorously right before your cleaning. This can make it more difficult for your dentist to spot oral health issues.
- Take ibuprofen if necessary: If your teeth are extra sensitive and you find your cleanings uncomfortable, taking ibuprofen beforehand can be helpful. Be sure to let your dental team know if you are feeling pain or discomfort. They may be able to help.
- Reschedule if you are sick: Your dental team would prefer that you reschedule your appointment if you are under the weather. You can come back when you are feeling better!
- Be honest: Don’t lie about how often you floss or bad habits you have. Your dental team will be able to care for you best if they know what your oral hygiene routine looks like. This way, they can give you the best advice to care for your smile.
Everyone needs to see the dentist regularly in order to obtain optimal oral health. Use the tips listed above so you can be ready for your next visit. Your smile will thank you!
